The Ultimate Fighter finalist confirms the rumors…
He was a finalist on season five of "The Ultimate Fighter," but since
then Manny Gamburyian has lost his last two fights to Rob Emerson
and Thiago Tavares. Now "The Anvil" has confirmed he will be dropping
down to the featherweight division and joining the WEC.
"I don’t know if the cut is going to be hard or easy – I haven’t made
145 in almost 10 years – but I’m going to do it in a good way. I’m
going to put together a beautiful training (camp). I’ve never been
this excited in my life."
UFC co-owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta wanted Gamburyan to make
the move following his loss to Emerson at UFC 87, but the Armenian
fighter still felt he had unfinished business with the man he lost
the Ultimate Fighter championship to, Nate Diaz. After the loss to
Tavares at UFC 94, Manny made the decision to cut down.
"There are a lot of good guys at 145 also. Mike Brown, Leonard Garcia,
Urijah Faber, Jens Pulver. But I think my ability to drop to 145 –
I’m going to be a lot stronger, and quicker. At 155, my technique is
my advantage, because the day I’m fighting, I’m 160, 162. The guys
are outweighing me by at least 20 pounds every fight, so I don’t
think that’s fair."
There is no date set for Gamburyan’s featherweight debut, but he’s
looking to fight as soon as May or June.
