The Armenian Government has announced a tender for holding a
competition which will identify which company should undertake the
construction of a new nuclear power station in the country. In 38
days the tender commission will announce the winner of this tender,
who will then hold the competition and thereby identify the most
appropriate power station constructor.

Armenia intends to construct a nuclear power station by 2016, with a
capacity of 100 megawatts. The approximate cost of the project will
be USD 5 billion. The country plans to mothball its existing nuclear
power station in 2016 when the new one is ready to replace it. The
present nuclear power station produces around 45% of the electricity
consumed in the country. The Russian Inter-Rao company has a contract
to run it until 2013.

PM Tigran Sarkisian highlights the economic as well as political
importance of this project. He welcomes Russian as well as Turkish
participation in it.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
