Serzh Sargsyan received the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II
and members of the Supreme Spiritual Council.

Serzh Sargsyan appreciated the fact that the close cooperation between
the state and the Holy Etchmiadzin is reinforcing day by day.

Noting that at times of hardship the faith in God has always been the
last hope of our people, Serzh Sargsyan said it’s due to the prayers
of our nation and the great role of our Church that we have managed
to pass the crossroads of the past years, have an independent state
at the end of the 20th century and move forward.

"The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest establishments in
the world that has been functioning for over 1 700 years. It’s also
the most ancient cultural and educational establishment we have. It’s
hard to imagine a more experienced and influential partner for the
state institutions of the Republic of Armenia," said Serzh Sargsyan.

It is not excluded that the global economic crisis will one day grow
into a spiritual one. During the periods of crisis our expectations
from Church double. People have witnessed many times that during
crisis the state and church second each other.

The efforts taken by our government instill hope that the aftermaths of
the global financial crisis will be reduced to the minimum. Parallely,
we must encourage patriotism and morality among our people to move
forward.," he added

During the meeting reference was made to the issues members of the
Supreme Spiritual Council were interested in.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
