ArmInfo. Photoreporter of Yerevan-based newspapers "Aravot" ("Morning")
and "Chorrord Ishkhanutyun" ("Fourth Power") Gagik Shamshyan was
beaten, Friday. The incident took place at the
Yerevan State Linguistic University after Brusov.

Armenian Ombudsman Armen Haroutyunyan has already negatively assessed
the given incident. "Such attitude to the journalist once again
confirms the lack of tolerance in the society. The reason is that
such cases were not punished in the past. I again call on the
law-enforcers to take all necessary measures to detect the culprits and
bring them to responsibility", – the ombudsman’s statement says.

According to the available information, Shamshyan was beaten by the
security service employees of the University after Brusov Friday
morning. The incident was preceded by a protest action of the students
who demanded proofs of the March 12 action of the youth movement
"Miasin" ("Together") who accused a number of professors of
Yerevan-based universities of bribery. After the action the students
returned to the University, and a group of journalists intended to
enter the University with the students and met the teaching staff,
however, the security service employees disturbed them. A verbal duel
started between Shamshyan and the security employees, afterwards the
photoreporter was beaten. At the moment Shamshyan is at "Nairi" medical
center. The police still abstains from any comments.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
