HOVSEP KHURSHUDIAN: ZHARANGUTIUN’S ANY FURTHER DECISION ON YEREVAN COUNCIL OF ELDERS ELECTIONS WILL SERVE OPPOSITION’S VICTORY

YEREVAN, MARCH 18, NOYAN TAPAN. According to Hovsep Khurshudian,
Zharangutiun (Heritage) party’s Spokesperson, opposition’s united
participation in Yerevan council of elders elections was very
important.

However, as he mentioned at the March 18 press conference, Zharangutiun
did not agree to Levon Ter-Petrosian’s heading the common preelection
roll to be made up with the Armenian National Congress. H. Khurshudian
explained it by the circumstance that according to their observations,
a large group of voters with opposition views does not sympathize with
the first President, and irrespective of the fact how many political
forces support the latter, those voters do not vote for him.

Therefore, in Zharangutiun Spokesperson’s affirmation, they
would like to see NA Zharangutiun faction head Armen Martirosian
in the first place on the common list, L. Ter-Petrosian in the
second place, Zharangutiun founder Raffi Hovannisian in the third
place. H. Khurshudian said that young A. Martirosian would quite fit
to the role of Mayor Gagik Beglarian’s rival, and A. Martirosian’s
victory would be ensured thanks to presence of two authoritative
leaders on the list.

H. Khurshudian added that it is not clear yet whether Zharangutiun
will run for council of elders elections or not. "In any case, our
any further decision will serve opposition’s victory," he said giving
assurance that this victory is beyond any doubt. H. Khurshudian also
advised journalists not to separate the two opposition wings, ANC and
Zharangutiun, as opposition is a single whole. "Our cooperation with
ANC will be continual," he said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
