US AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA CALLS PLURALISM IMPORTANT ASPECT OF FREE SOCIETY ESTABLISHMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

ArmInfo. US Ambassador to Armenia calls pluralism an important
aspect of free society establishment and development, US Ambassador
to Armenia Marie L. Yovanovitch said at a conference devoted to human
rights problems in Armenia Thursday.

The Ambassador highlighted the importance of human rights protection in
the context of free press. She expressed concern over the latest cases
of violence to journalists in Armenia. The Ambassador called pluralism
an important aspect of fre society establishment and development. Print
press in Armenia present variety of opinions, however the problems
and issues it covers are very restricted, Ambassador Yovanovitch
said. Journalists often avoid covering important and acute public
problems which shows that public is not ready to free press, she said.

The Ambassador is sure that democratic development and anti-corruption
fight is supported by the freedom of press. M. Yovanovitch also came
out for development of local TV companies in the regions of Armenia.
