Ian Kiernan AO of Clean Up Australia
Guest Speaker of HASG College’s New
Yeretz Academy for Leadership & Mentoring

Mr Ian Kiernan AO, Chairman of Clean Up Australia will be the inaugural
guest speaker on Tuesday 24 March 2009 for HASG College’s new Yeretz Academy
for Leadership & Mentoring.
Respect for the wisdom and guidance of our elders ("Yeretz") in sharing
their invaluable life experiences has always been an important part of
Armenian culture and tradition. Accordingly, in 2008 HASG College introduced
its "Leadership & Mentoring" program for students from Years 10-12.
The aim of the mentoring program is to foster the growth and development of
our maturing students, and to learn and benefit from the experience of
accomplished leaders, who have succeeded in business, politics, sport,
academia, the arts, or through personal adversity.
In 2008, our senior students were fortunate to have outstanding speakers
such as NSW Shadow Minister for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian MP; Chair of
the Community Relations Commission and President of the NSW
Anti-Discrimination Board, Dr Stepan Kerkyasharian AM; entrepreneur and
philanthropist, Dick Smith AO; A1 racing driver (and College Alumni), Chris
Alajajian; CSIRO scientist, Dr John Sarkissian; and many others.
Commenting on the Leadership & Mentoring Program, Gladys Berejiklian said:
"The value of the mentoring program is two-fold. Not only does it provide
the students with the opportunity to gain first hand insights into specific
occupations in the "real" world, but it provides us as presenters a
wonderful opportunity to hear about the aspirations of the students and
their hopes for the future."

Due to the success of this program in 2008, HASG College has re-launched it
in 2009 as a permanent co-curriculum program of its Senior School known as
the Yeretz Academy for Leadership & Mentoring.

HASG Alumni
Returns to College as Counsellor

HASG College has always been extremely proud of its graduates. Many of them,
after completing their education including tertiary studies, have served in
leadership roles for, and given back to, the wider community as well as the
Armenian-Australian Community.

This year, another of our Alumni, Mrs Taline Kayserian (nee Soghomonian) has
returned to HASG College as its new College Counsellor.

Taline graduated from HASG College in 2002 with a UAI over 90%. She began
university studies the following year, graduating from Macquarie University
with a BA in Psychology in 2005. She completed her Honours degree in
Psychology in 2006, graduating with distinctions. In 2007, she continued her
studies by undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology. Early
this year, Taline became a fully registered Psychologist and member of the
NSW Psychologists Board.

"It is fitting that Taline replaces our long-serving College Counsellor and
another Alumni in Ms Melanie Kashadourian who left last year to continue her
studies in the United Kingdom," said Principal, Mr. Kaylar Michaelian.

Mr. Michaelian continued: "We are very fortunate and grateful that Taline is
returning to her alma mater to continue the great work done by Melanie with
the College students. Both of these educated and dedicated young
Armenian-Australians personify the mission of this College and the vision of
the College founders, while serving as important role models for our current
and future students."

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
