The State Committee of Water Industry recently studied the bulwark
of Azatan reservoir in Shirak Marz. The estimate for the reservoir
reinforcement hasn’t been drawn up. The Marzpetaran has already
expressed readiness to help construction works.
The rescue service of the RoA Minister of Emergency Situations
received an alarm signaling to a water overflow and possible collapse
of the bulwark.
Although the overflow has been stopped, the local residents fear that
the bulwark may collapse at any point as it takes water to neighbouring
farms where spring sowing is already underway.
The residents blocked the way of the water with 150 sacks of sand and
were able to strengthen the stronghold. Finally, they were able to
find the reason for the water overflow. The bulwark turned out to have
been built on an empty surface as the earth had sunk during the years.
The reservoir was built some fifty years ago, in the 1960s.
It can hardly be considered an engineering structure meeting all
standards and demands. Besides, the reservoir doesn’t have sewerage.
The spring sowing is already underway in the marz while the bulwark
is rundown and needs urgent fixation.
According to preliminary estimation the reinforcement will cost about
1 000 000 drams.
