One should not consider the opening of the border by Turkey as a
‘prize’ to Armenia, Director of the Armenian Center of National and
International Studies Richard Kirakosyan said at a press conference
Wednesday.
‘Both the positive and the negative aspects of opening the
Armenian-Turkish border are extremely exaggerated. I do not think
that such a step as well as recognition of Armenian Genocide by our
neighbor should be considered as ‘a favor’ or ‘a prize’ to our country.
These are just the minimal requirements to any civilized state’,
the political expert said.
He highlighted two aspects in the general context of development
of our countries’ relationship: normalization of relations and
reconciliation. ‘There is a considerable difference between the
normalization and reconciliation. The first one implies opening
of borders and establishment of diplomatic relations between the
two states, whereas the second one implies recognition of Armenian
Genocide by Turkey. I am not worried about the first aspect. But I
am afraid reconciliation is not yet in sight’, Kirakosyan said.
