YEREVAN TO HOST CONFERENCE SOCIAL IMPACT OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS ON ARMENIA

A joint conference organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social
Issues, the UN , World Bank and International Monetary Fund Armenia
Offices on Social Impact of the Global Economic Crisis on Armenia and
Ways to Offset this Impact on the Crisis will take place on 14 April,
Tuesday, in Erebuni Plaza Hotel, Yerevan.
The Conference focuses on the adverse impact the ongoing global
economic and financial crisis may have on Armenia’s ability to achieve
the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. While the Armenian
economy has already been affected, the Armenian population is now
starting to feel the social impact as well.
The UN Agencies in Armenia will support the government’s efforts in
devising solutions that will draw together all stakeholders, including
international organizations, private sector and the civil society. In
addition, the UN in Armenia is in the process of tailoring its current
programs to address the needs of those most affected by the crisis.
Participants of the event are: Ms. Consuelo Vidal, UN Resident
Coordinator, Mr. Tigran Sargsyan, Prime Minister of Armenia, Mr. Arsen
Hambartsumyan, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Mr. Aristomene
Varoudakis, WB Country Office Manager, Ms. Nienke Oomes, IMF Resident
Representative, Ms. Laylee Moshiri-Gilani, UNICEF Representative and
Ms. Elizabeth Danielyan, WHO Head of Office.
