Opening of the Vienna Vision Center in Gyumri (25.04.09)

In the Austrian Paediatric hospital in Gyumri a new ophthalmology
division was established at the end of 2007. However, there has been
an insufficient supply of eyeglasses and frames in the area. Families,
provided they can afford it, have to drive more than 120 Km over a
2000 meter high mountain pass to reach the capital city of Yerevan in
order to be able to purchase eyeglasses and frames for their children.

Therefore the idea has been born to set up an optical center attached
to this paediatric hospital, called "Vienna Vision Center", which will
act as a Non-Profit-Organization. This center will cater to the whole
region supplying frames and eyeglasses.

Through this project following individuals in the region of Shirak
will receive the eyeglasses (including the glasses) free of charge:

All children up to age of 18
Students of university of Gyumri
Persons at compulsory military service
Handicapped and disabled people regardless of their age
Persons under family chart carrying "social passport" of more than 36
points The project was initiated in 2007 through Family Maghakian in
Vienna, Austria and financed by donations and technical support from
Austria, Germany, USA, Syria, Lebanon and UAE. It is acting under
Vienna Vision Charitable fund, of which the boards of trustee consists
of 4 Diaspora Armenians and 3 Armenia residents. In the first three
months of 2009 the center had already distributed more than 400 frames
(including glasses)."
