Charles loves Charles cover

BY JASON MACNEIL

While hundreds of artists from Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire to Bob
Dylan and Elvis Costello have covered his songs, Charles Aznavour says
there is one that stands out above them all.

"Yes, it’s not nice to say it but I can say it," he says. "Ray Charles
(who covered La Mamma). He recorded another song which never went out
yet which I hope is going to come out.

"I knew him very well, we were quite close and something nobody knows
(is) that he had a son who was half-Armenian. And we had the same
taste for champagne, which was not bad either."

Another project which Aznavour has an indirect role in is the musical
comedy Je m’Voyais Deja (I Could Already See Myself). The stage
production is based on his songs and under the artistic direction of
his daughter Katia Aznavour.

"She does what she has to do," Aznavour says about his daughter. "I’m
not the kind of parent who wants to explain that my daughter is the
best or my son is fantastic. They do what they have to do. As my
father told me, ‘Go, do it and show me.’ "

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
