ARMENIAN PREMIER DISCUSSES IMPROVEMENT OF WOMEN’S STATUS WITH MEMBERS OF WOMEN’S COUNCIL

YEREVAN, May 11. /ARKA/. Armenian Premier discussed issues on
improvement of women’s status in the country at the meeting of the
premier-headed Women’s Council of Armenia, the government press
service reported.

At the meeting, Armenian Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Filaret
Berikyan reported on measures implemented in 2008 in the scope of
the national program for improvement of women’s status in the society
for 2004-2010.

The aim of the 2008 measures was improvement of the laws on gender
equality, social protection of women, healthcare issues, reforms
in education and science and prevention of family violence cases,
Berikyan said.

The Minister also provided details on measures implemented by the
ministries of labor, healthcare, education and science, culture, nature
protection, agriculture, economy, foreign affairs, as well as the
country’s Police, Yerevan Municipality and regional administrations.

The meeting participants attached importance to clarifications to be
made to the national program bearing in mind the reality, as well as
to use of efficient mechanisms in controlling implementation of the
planned measures and ethical and cultural upgrading of the youth.

The Premier instructed the Secretary of the Women’s Council to
prepare a draft government decree about mechanisms of control over
i mplementation of the national program for improvement of women’s
status in the society for 2004-2010.

The Council made a decision to amend their charter and set control
functions there. The draft amendments are to be submitted at the next
meeting for approval.

The Women’s Council decided to set up, in cooperation with public
organizations and government agencies, three target groups – for
education, science and culture, for social issues and for healthcare.

Nominations for the group members are to be discussed at the next
meeting of the Council.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs was assigned to report on the
comments about Armenia in respect to the UN Convention on Elimination
of All Forms of Women’s Discrimination and its implementation in
the country.
