COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Elections Commission wants to hear more
about the claim of a local Republican congresswoman that mixes local
politics with Turkish history and U.S. foreign policy.

U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt, of Miami Township, said an opponent made
false campaign statements that she was a puppet of Turkish efforts
to deny that the mass killings of Armenians in Turkey in World War
I constituted genocide.

Schmidt said the claims violated election law.

David Krikorian is an Armenian American who challenged Schmidt as an
independent in 2008.

He said Schmidt accepted campaign donations from Turkish interests
in return for helping them deny the genocide.

Many scholars view the Armenian deaths as the first genocide of the
20th century, but Turkey denies that the deaths constituted genocide.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
