ArmInfo. A programme "Stop Tuberculosis with Drug Resistance (TDR)
in Armenia" started in Yerevan today.
Tuberculosis has been known to the humanity since the year
dot. It took away the lives of thousand people before invention
of antibiotics. Total of 8-10 mln people suffer from tuberculosis
and 2,7-3 mln people die in the world every year. Tuberculosis is a
topical problem for Armenia. The number of the registered patients in
2008 reached 2125. The Health Ministry is implementing a programme
"Intensification of national tuberculosis- fight programme in
Armenia" in the republic. TDR develops as a result of incomplete
treatment of patients. Treatment of this disease takes a long time,
it is more expensive and heavier for a patient than treatment of a
common tuberculosis. Five hundred people suffering from TDR have been
currently registered in Armenia.
The "Doctors Without Borders" organization and "Armenian Red Cross
Society" deal with TDR problem, under financing of "Elly Lily and
Co" companies.
The programme started with an action contributing to enhancement
of the public’s awareness. The action was held in one of the most
populous parts of Yerevan, near "Yeritasardakan" metro station.
Leaflets covering the problem were distributed to the street
walkers. The action organizers answered the questions of the street
walkers and delivered and information about the activity of the
Armenian Red Cross Society and Elly Lily Co, as well as about their
joint programme.
