Joe Ward and Michael Reilly are just one bout away from at least
bronze medals after winning their last 16 matches at the AIBA World
Junior Championships at the Sports Complex in Yerevan, Armenia today.

But Newry bantamweight Ryan McKeown is out of the tournament after
he was edged out 12-9 by Belzhan Amantayev of Kazakhstan.

However, Moate light middleweight Ward exacted a measure of revenge
when he stopped Denis Rybak of Kazakhstan in the third round.

Immediately before the Ward/Rybak bout, Reilly shaded a thrilling
contest with Manuel Osorio of Puerto Rico, winning the see saw light
welterweight showdown 5-4.

Christy Joyce and Chris Mullally will be involved in last 16 bouts
later on.

Cork flyweight Roy O’Carroll bowed out of the 51-nation World
Championships after he was beaten 16-8 by Cuba’s Carrazana Ramirez
yesterday.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
