SWEDEN NOT TO RECOGNIZE GENOCIDE OF ARMENIANS

Sweden will not recognize the developments that happened in Ottoman
Turkey during World War I as genocide against Armenians, the countrys
Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has said. In his letter replying to Cecilia
Wikstrom, a pro-Armenian lawmaker representing the Swedish Liberal
People’s Party, he wrote that solving the issue was not politicians
job. This issue should be addressed by historians. Present-day Turkey
is not responsible for its past, the letter said. Armenians say Ottoman
Turks killed 1.5 million people in 1915 and brand the developments as
genocide, while Turkey strenuously dismisses the claim. Yerevan has
repeatedly declined Ankaras proposals to collaborate in researching
the developments.
