Today Armenia celebrates the First Republic Day. Ninety-one years ago
the Armenian people regained its statehood through the heroic battles
of Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan and Gharakilissa. The triumphant month of
May became the basis for free and independent Armenia.

Fetive mood prevailed also at Sardarapat, where people from different
sites of Armenia and the world gathered today to remember the killed
fellows and to rejoice for the fatal victories. This year the youth
came to the Sardarapat Memorial with the slogans: "No concession to
Turkey," "The Armenian spirit will not yield." They consider that
it’s unity that has kept Armenians Armenian.

Every year on May 28 Varuzhan Arakelyan comes to Armenia from Iran. He
is confident that over these years the spirit of independent statehood
has remained in the soul of Armenians. "That victory shaped the
Armenian people’s spirit of living free. The Armenian became stronger
and understood that independence could be regained through blood.

Matevos Terteryan also said to be glad to be in the motherland on
this symbolic day.

May 28 is the day, when only the Armenian spirit is felt around the
Memorial of Sardarapat. In small pavilions one can find traditional
lavash, wheat, scythe, sickle and mortar.

Today is a hol iday. Let’s preserve and strengthen our independent
statehood to be able to show worthy resistance to contemporary
challenges.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
