MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (A.W.)-Armenian Weekly editor Khatchig Mouradian
was recently named the Seventh Arsham and Charlotte Ohanessian
Lecturer at the University of Minnesota. His talk, titled "What’s in
a Name?: The Adoption of ‘Genocide’ to Describe the Annihilation of
the Armenians in 1915-16," will explore the various terms Armenians
have used to describe the catastrophe that befell them in 1915-16,
and the way the term "genocide" was incorporated into the discourse
of Armenian newspapers.

Mouradian is a journalist, writer, and translator. He was an editor
of the Lebanese-Armenian Aztag Daily from 2000-07, when he moved to
Boston and assumed the editorship of the Armenian Weekly. Mouradian’s
articles, interviews, and poems have appeared in publications worldwide
and been translated to many languages. He has lectured extensively
and participated in conferences in Armenia, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon,
Syria, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, and the United States.

The Arsham and Charlotte Ohanessian Lectures result from a generous
gift by Arsham Ohanessian to the College of Liberal Arts of the
University of Minnesota. Previous speakers include Prof. Peter
Balakian, Prof. Richard Hovannisian, and Etyen Mahcupyan.

Arsham Ohanessian was a successful businessman and avid musician. He
was devoted to maintaining the memory of the Armenian Genocide as
a way of promoting peaceful reconciliation among peoples. His gift
to the University of Minnesota supports a wide range of educational,
research, and public programs concerning ethnic and national conflicts
and human rights.

The lecture will be held on June 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mississippi
Room at Coffman Union, East Bank Campus, at the University of
Minnesota.
