Gagik Beglaryan swore in as Mayor of Yerevan at the residence of the
Yerevan City Council today. The inauguration ceremony was attended
by the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, other senior
officials.
To the accompaniment of the national anthem, members of the City
Council, actor Vladimir Msryan and composer Martin Vardazaryan brough
in the Mayor’s necklace. Gagik Beglaryan said that governing Yerevan
he would serve the nation.
After uttering the oath, Gagik Beglaryan noted in his speech that this
was a historic day for the residents of Yerevan. "For the first time
in history Yerevan will be governed by elected authorities. It’s a
great honor and a great responsibility to assume the administration
of the capital city, which has centuries-long history. We are going
to work with greater vigor to study the best international practice
of local self-governance and apply it," the Mayor said.
"The Mayor cannot be mine or yours in independent Armenia. Yerevan
cannot be ours or yours. Yerevan is home to all of us. As Mayor,
I promise that the meetings of the citizens with me and the City
Council will be periodic, because the feedback will help us assess
the effectiveness of the work we have done," Gagik Beglaryan noted.
Congratulating the Mayor, President Sarg syan voiced hope that he
would justify the hopes of all citizens of Yerevan.
"I have great expectations from the newly elected Mayor. It’s clear
that after the constitutional changes he will have less chances to
take single-handed decisions than the previous Mayors had. But this
does not mean that the share of the Mayor’s responsibility or his
role will decrease.
In today’s reality the Mayor should be a leader responsible for
successes and failures, who confesses that governing means serving,"
the President stated.
The inauguration ceremony was blessed by Navasard Archbishop Kchoyan
