U.S. GOVERNMENT FUNDED EDMUND S. MUSKIE GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM COMMEMORATES 16 YEARS IN ARMENIA

YEREVAN, Armenia, April 30 — The U.S. Embassy issued the following
press release:
On April 30, 2009, the U.S. Embassy in Armenia represented
by Ambassador Marie L. Yovanovitch, the Government of Armenia
represented by a number of Armenia’s ministers, IREX Armenia, and
Muskie alumni commemorated the 16-year anniversary of the Edmund
S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship program in the Marriott Hotel "Tigran
Mets" ballroom. Remarks were delivered by Ambassador Yovanovitch,
Minister of Economy Nerses Yeritsyan, and the director of IREX Armenia
Arina Zohrabian.
Established by the U.S. Congress in 1992 to encourage economic
and democratic growth in Eurasia, the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate
Fellowship Program is a program of the Bureau of Educational and
Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, and administered
by IREX. The program provides opportunities for graduate students and
professionals from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and
Uzbekistan for one-year non-degree, one-year degree or two-year
degree study in the United States. Eligible fields of study for the
Muskie Program include business administration, economics, education,
environmental management, international affairs, journalism and
mass communication, law, library and information science, public
administration, public health, and public policy. To date, more than
360 Armenians have been awarded Muskie fellowships under the U.S. State
Department-funded program.
More than 60 alumni joined the reception to learn about various career
opportunities available to them within Armenia’s ministries and to
network with Armenia’s state officials. Fifteen newly selected Muskie
finalists who will embark for their U.S. studies in August 2009 were
also in attendance.
