YEREVAN, JUNE 30, NOYAN TAPAN. PACE Resolution N 1677 on activity of
democratic institutions in Armenia made a serious change in country’s
political life. Naira Zohrabian, a member of the Armenian parliamentary
delegation in PACE, a member of the RA National Assembly Bargavach
Hayastan (Prosperous Armenia) faction, stated at the June 29 press
conference. In her words, the Resolution recorded that the Armenian
authorities have taken pivotal steps to overcome the home political
crisis that emerged after the 2008 presidential elections and the March
1 events. In this respect attaching importance to the amnesty granted
by the President, N. Zohrabian said that it is one more proposal to
the opposition to start a dialogue with the authorities and expressed
the hope that the opposition will accept it.

Feeling sorry for dissolution of the fact-finding committee, the
Assembly, according to N. Zohrabian, laid more responsibility on the NA
Ad-hoc Committee on Events Occurred on 1-2 March. The deputy attached
importance to the circumstance that Committee’s conclusion should
satisfy not only the authorities or the opposition, but also should be
reliable and acceptable for as wide circle of society as possible. As
a member of the Ad-hoc Committee she attached importance to disclosure
of the March 1 murders and calling for liability those guilty.

According to N. Zohrabian, the fact-finding committee during its
activity had gathered nearly 2000 pages of documents, which were
passed to the Ad-hoc Committee. The deputy is for publication of all
those documents. She assured that the most important of them will be
included in Ad-hoc Committee’s conclusion. N. Zohrabian said that it
will be proposed interrogating the policemen being on the scene of
action on that day, as well as carrying out expertise of special means
used by the Police with the participation of European specialists.

According to the deputy, the new PACE Resolution also recorded that
not all problems of Armenia have been solved and the country will
remain under monitoring.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
