AMBASSADOR OF IRAN: IMPLEMENTATION OF JOINT STRATEGIC PROGRAMS BY ARMENIA AND IRAN WILL CONTINUE

YEREVAN, JULY 1, NOYAN TAPAN. Implementation of joint strategic
programs by Armenia and Iran, construction of railway, oil products
pipeline, will continue. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of IRI to Armenia Seyed Ali Saghaian stating this at the July 1
meeting with journalists said that a group of Iranian experts will
visit Armenia soon. According to the Ambassador, these programs can
have regional significance. In particular, Russia, Kazakhstan, and
Turkmenistan have already expressed willingess to take part in the
railway project. He also said that currently commodity circulation
between Armenia and Iran amounts to nearly 250m USD and in general
there is an intention to increase it up to 500m USD.

"Iran attaches much importance to relations with Armenia and treats the
Iranian Armenian community with respect," the Iranian diplomat said. In
connection with the Armenian-Turkish dialogue the Ambassador said
that Iran welcomes all initiatives that will result in establishment
of peace and stability in the region.

In response to the question about Silva Haroutiunian being imprisoned
for a year, accused of espionage, the Ambassador expressed the
hope that she will be pardoned soon on the basis of her relatives’
application.
