87.7% increase in the Sunni population in Zahle, believe it or not
Al-Safir Magazine published a study, prepared by the national
organization for information (Aldawliah lel Maaloomat) about the
elections in the region of Zahle, which showed that the Christian
sects in that area have not shown a significant increase in the number
of voters from 1992 until 2009, as this increase was 4% for the
Catholics 7.3% for the Maronites 5.1% for the Roman Orthodox and a
decline for the Armenian orthodox and catholic by 5.8 and 6.3%
respectively.
These negative demographic percentages show a large decrease in the
number of Christians compared to Sunnis and Shiites, as these two
group have shown a dramatic increase in voter numbers, reaching 45.7%
for the Shiites and an even greater number, considered record-breaking
for the Sunni at 87.7% this year. This shows the great effects of the
bill for naturalization of 1994 where around 4500 Sunnis were
naturalized and entered into the records of that region, which has
brought about a change in the demographic balance that has increased
over the years.
Adding to that there was an increase in the number of Sunni voters
whose levels reached 72% of all registered voters, that is to say
28,675 voters compared to 60% in 2005, thus the number of voters has
increased by 16.9% between the years 2000 and 2005 whereas the number
of voters increased by 46.2%. Between the years, 2005 and 2009 the
number of Sunni voters increased by 17.3% and their numbers increased
by 40.5%, and those who voted during these elections voted
overwhelmingly in favor of the pro-loyalist forces.
