Linking the resolution of the Karabakh conflict to the relations
with Turkey would be one of the losses of Armenian foreign policy and
diplomacy, ex-Foreign Minister of Armenia Alexander Arzumanyan told a
press conference today, adding that it would bring no positive results.
Speaking about domestic political issues, he said the debate between
the authorities and the opposition often becomes incomprehensible to
him. "I cannot understand when the authorities and the opposition
discuss who won at the PACE session. Here we should address issues
of the Armenian people.
I’m not interested who will make a weepier speech, Naira Zohrabyan
or David Harutyunyan. That’s not what I’m interested in," Alexander
Arzumanyan said.
The former Foreign Minister considers that the Europeans who assess
the democratization of Armenia are bureaucrats, who are well aware of
the situation. According to him, the Council of Europe is a political
structure, which has 40 member states with different interests,
and any decision is made on the basis of common consent. Therefore,
let’s say, Prescott and Colombier work normally.
Speaking about Armenian-Turkish relations, Alexander Arzumanyan
said he had always stood for establishment of relations with Turkey
without preconditions.
"I think both sides have been setting contradicting preconditions over
the past 15 years. As for the road map, it’s a great bluff. It was
simply beneficial for Turkey to create an illusion of dialogue. In
fact, Turkey sets a precondition and links the normalization of
relations with the Karabakh issue. It has always been an unacceptable
approach. Armenian authorities have been repeating since 1991 that
the Armenian-Turkish relations and the Karabakh conflict are two
different issues," he said.
Turkey has used the Armenian-Turkish relations to solve certain issues,
the ex-Foreign Minister concluded. According to him, there no progress
has been registered in the Armenian-Turkish relations.
