AZERBAIJANI RULING PARTY BELIEVES IN PROGRESS AT MOSCOW’S PRESIDENTIAL MEETING

Azerbaijani ruling party believes in achievement of progress in
settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict at the meeting of the
Azerbaijani and the Armenian presidents to be held in Moscow.
"Signing of statement by heads of three co-chairmen-countires of
OSCE Minsk Group during the meeting of Big Eight countreis (G8) and
announcement of basis principles on settlement of confclict indicate
on signinficant promotion in negotiating process," executive secretary
of New Azerbaijan ruling party Ali Ahmedov told media on July 13.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan
lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December
1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7
districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed
a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia,
France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.
Next meeting of the Azerbaijani and the Armenian presidents is positive
fact amid these promotions in negotiating process, Akhmedov said. "One
can suppose that progress reached earlier will be developed at the
Moscow’s meeting of presidents of both countries. From other side, if
there was not any progress, there would be no necessity for presidents’
meeting," executive secretary of ruling party said.
Many people realize that it is time for settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, Akhmedov said. "It is not only conflict between Armenia
and Azerbaijan. Consequences of conflict impact situation in
South Caucasus. It is impossible to ensure stability, security and
cooperation in the region without its settlement. I think that Moscow
realizes that one of important terms of settlement of processes causing
anxiety in the south of Russia is settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict," Akhmedov said.
New Azerbaijan Party was established by Azerbaijani national leader
Heydar Aliyev in 1992. That time he was chairman of Supreme Majlis of
Nachchivan. Presently, Ilham Aliyev heads this party within 16 years.
