/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkey is still not sure what it wants from the
process of normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations, Richard
Giragosian , Director of the Armenian Center for Strategic and National
Studies told journalists today in Yerevan. "Turkey underestimated
the reaction of Azerbaijan and overestimated its power. Today there
is a possibility for normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations,
but there is a big difference in the process of normalization of
relations and reconciliation, " the Armenian expert said.
Richard Giragosian called it a positive shift in the Armenian-Turkish
relations, that although the border between Armenia and Turkey
remains closed, "the border was opened in the minds of people of
both countries." "Following the visit of the Turkish President
Abdullah Gul to Yerevan borders were opened in the minds of the
Turkish intelligentsia representatives. During this period, intensive
discussions took place around the issue of the Armenian Genocide,
and this happens especially in Turkey. The most important layer
for the discussion of the Armenian Genocide is Turkey, rather than
Washington or Brussels. That is what will decide whether Turkey would
become a normal country that recognized the Armenian Genocide or not,
" the expert said.
He expressed confidence that the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan
will leave for Turkey to attend the return match of Armenia’s and
Turkey’s teams. "But this time the pressure of the superpowers will be
directed to Turkey, since there are expectations from Ankara, but not
from Yerevan. United States and Russia will not be happy if the Turkish
drama does not reach its successful end, " Richard Giragosian said.
