This morning at the Kentron and Nork-Marash District Court the case
of Vahagn Gevorgyan, son of Hayk Gevorgyan, a manager and reporter
at the daily newspaper "Haykakan Zhamanak" got underway. The trial
was postponed till August 19.
Vahagn is charged with verbal injury and assault against an officer
of the state.
The postponement was due to the fact that Vahagn had to change lawyers
at the last moment and because one of the scheduled witnesses was on
vacation and couldn’t make the court session.
The criminal case against Vahagn Gevorgyan stems from an encounter that
opposition youth had with the police on Northern Avenue back in April.
The maximum penalty for verbal injury is a fine of 100 AMD and 300,000
– 500,000, or five years in jail, for the assault charge.
