ORDER OF IMPORTING MEAT FROM INDIA TO BE ESTABLISHED IN ARMENIA

ArmInfo. An order of importing buffalo meat from India will be
established in Armenia alongside with the quality criteria. The
relevant decision was taken on August 19, during a meeting at the
Armenian government held on the results of the 2-9 August visit of an
official Armenian delegation to India, which was gathering information
on the quality of buffalo meat imported from India and used in Armenia
in the production of sausage goods.
The participants in the meeting recalled that a number of states,
including EU countries, ban the import of Indian meat on the basis of
high risks connected with the quality. Speaking of the results of the
visit to India, the delegates said that only 21% of the Indian buffalo
meat imported to Armenia meets the required standards. There are 17
companies operating in the specified field in India in accordance with
the relevant certificates and occupy 85% of the Indian market. "It
turns out that our importers prefer buying meat from the rest 15%
to save money on the quality. We should ensure the import of only
high-quality meat. In this matter it is necessary to display firmness
and consistency as the health of our citizens depends on this",-
the prime minister said. He instructed the agriculture ministry
to strengthen the control over the meat imported to Armenia and
consolidate the cooperation with the Armenian Committee for State
Income controlling the customs field. In particular, according to
the survey of the Armenian Committee for State Income, the companies
importing meat of unknown origin fill in names of certified companies
in the customs documents. Several proposals were accepted during the
Aug 19 meeting. In particular, a proposal was put forward to appoint a
special veterinary representative of Armenia in India, who will have
an opportunity to observe the whole process of storing and importing
meat to Armenia (there are already similar representatives of Georgia
and Egypt in India), as well as a proposal to establish an order on
meat import and quality criteria.
