BATUM, AUGUST 27, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. The Union of Armenians
of Ajaria turns 5.

The Armenian community of Ajaria has a population of over 12 000
people, most of which, more than 9 500 live in Ajaria’s capital city,
Batum. The Union of Armenians of Ajaria headed by Grigor Vardanian
has over 300 members, and 150 young people are members of the Youth
Union under the Union.

The Union of Armenians of Ajaria works rather actively. According to
a report received from the Union, it holds nearly 200 events a year,
which are periodically covered by mostly Georgian central television,
radio, and media.

The Union works much to consolidate the Armenians and to settle the
problems emerging in the community.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
