Some Azerbaijani opposition parties to hold protest action
Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 4 / Trend News A.Huseynbala /
The union, which unites several opposition parties, is likely to hold
protest action in front of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
The rally supported by the Karabakh Liberation Organization will
demand to refuse from the Madrid principles on the solution of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, head of the Azadlig party represented in
the Union for Democracy told Trend News on Sept.3.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding
districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in
1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the
U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.
"We will appeal to the Baku Executive Power to sanction a protest
action to be held at 12:00 on Sept.24. We will attempt to hold the
rally regardless of reply," Oruj said.
Union for Democracy was founded by the opposition Classic Popular
Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after 2005
parliamentary election. Great Azerbaijan Party joined the union in
early Sept. 2008 and People’s Party – in Nov. The Union is advisory
and cooperation body.
