VERCAUTEREN QUITS AFTER ARMENIA UPSET

Franky Vercauteren stood down as interim Belgium coach in the wake
of his side’s humbling 2-1 defeat to Armenia.

Vercauteren had been in the role since the dismissal of Rene
Vandereycken in April and was due to quit the post in January, with
Dutch coach Dick Advocaat to take up the reins.

"After the 2-1 defeat against Armenia, the Red Devils coach Frank
Vercauteren decided to resign," read a statement on the Belgian
FA website.

Belgium lost 5-0 to Spain on Saturday and were stunned tonight as
Armenia claimed their first win of the campaign thanks to goals from
Hovhannes Goharyan and Sargis Hovsepyan.

Bayern Munich defender Daniel van Buyten pulled one back for Belgium
in second-half stoppage time but it was not enough to prevent the
1986 World Cup semi-finalists’ miserable campaign sinking to a new low.

The Red Devils are fourth in the group with seven points from eight
matches, 17 points behind group winners Spain.
