The Nagorno-Karabakh military flatly denied on Thursday Azerbaijani
media reports saying that five of its soldiers were killed and three
others wounded in a skirmish with Azerbaijani forces.
Azerbaijani news agencies claimed that Armenian forces suffered the
casualties after they went on offensive in the Aghdam district east
of Karabakh mostly occupied by them during the 1991-1994 war with
Azerbaijan. They said one Azerbaijani soldier was also injured in
the clash. Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry to comment.
Karabakh’s Defense Ministry was quick to deny the reports. A ministry
statement described them as "yet another piece of disinformation
spread by Baku’s propaganda machine."
AFP news agency quoted ministry spokesman Senor Hasratian as saying
that Azerbaijani forces fired on Armenian positions overnight but
that there were no casualties. "This is complete disinformation from
the Azerbaijanis," he said.
Armenian-Azerbaijani skirmishes remain a regular occurrence more
than 15 years a Russian-mediated truce stopped the bloody war in
Karabakh. Dozens of soldiers on both sides are reportedly killed in
such incidents every year.
