Washington has revised the plans on building the missile-defense
system in Poland and comes out with a new proposal for Warsaw. Thus,
the U.S. MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile (SAM) system will
bear atomic warhead instead of nonatomic – as earlier was planned,
Stanislaw Komorowski, Undersecretary of State for Defense Policy at
the Ministry of National Defense of Poland, told ITAR-TASS on his
return from the United States.
According to him, the proposal will be in focus during Poland-American
negotiations in October.
Komorowski proposes U.S. to build Standard Missile 3 logistical
support bases and control stations on the Polish territory. SM-3 is
being developed as part of the US Navy’s sea-based ballistic missile
defense system and will provide theater-wide defense against medium
and long range ballistic missiles.
The new details of U.S. missile-defense plans became known in mid
September. Barack Obama said September 17, he had decided to accept
the advice of U.S. Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, for a "smarter,
stronger and swifter" interceptors to be sited in Poland. American
side maintains the air defense system can be integrated into the
Poland’s air defense system.
