`Yerkir’ Union condemns the statement by the Minister of Internal
Affairs of Georgia Merabishvili made on September 24 in Akhalkalaki

According to Georgian media, the Georgian Interior Minister Vano
Merabishvili, during the visit of the government members to
Akhalkalaki on September 24, stated the following: "We examined the
crime situation here and I want to say that the crimes in Javakhk have
decreased in number. … There are some people who are discontented
with the work of the police, because some members of their families
are arrested. I hope the number of crimes in the region will be
reduced even further.

In the light of the ongoing trial over Javakheti Armenian political
activist Vahagn Chakhalyan, accompanied by flagrant violations, and
police repressions carried out against his supporters and relatives,
the statement of Mr. Merabishvili can be characterized as cynicism.

Furthermore, the Georgian authorities by this statement once again
reaffirm their determination to continue the policy of
"neutralization" of the fair demands of the Armenian minority of the
country by persecuting the Armenian political activists on trumped-up
charges and spreading the atmosphere of terror.

Taking into account the recent statement by the President of Armenia,
Serzh Sarkisyan on the problems of the Georgian Armenians, the growing
interest of the international structures toward Vahagn Chakhalyan’s
trial, and the situation in the field of protection of the rights of
ethnic minorities, the strategy of "police repressions" carried out by
the Georgian authorities has exhausted itself.

`Yerkir’ Union calls upon the Georgian authorities to stop
repressions, to release Vahagn Chakhalyan and by means of constructive
dialogue to implement steps aimed at addressing the
linguistic-educational, religious and cultural problems facing the
Armenian minority.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
