Speaking after a meeting with Greek Ambassador in Nicosia Vasileios
Papaioannou, Cyprus Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou said that
Turkey’s evaluation by the EU is the key issue of concern of Government
of Cyprus as well as the Government of Greece.

The Foreign Ministry has begun the implementation of a strategy decided
by the National Council towards Turkey, Kyprianou said, adding that
Cyprus’s position towards Turkey’s EU orientation suggests that all
the EU candidate nations should fulfill their obligations towards
the EU and its members. If not, there should be consequences, he said.

"The punishment of Turkey is not our goal", he said underlining thought
that if Ankara continues not to comply, there will be sanctions.

Addressing to EU officials Markos Kyprianou said: "If they really
wish to help the process, they should send a clear message to Turkey
to comply with its obligations."

Note that Turkey is an EU candidate; however, it does not recognize
the Republic of Cyprus.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
