YEREVAN, OCTOBER 14, NOYAN TAPAN. The signing of the Armenian-Turkish
protocols was a deal of betrayal as Armenia made concessions in the
issue of international recognition of Armenian Genocide expecting to
receive opening of the border with Turkey for it. Armenian National
Congress (ANC) Coordinator Levon Zurabian expressed such an opinion
at an October 14 press conference mentioning that creation of
an Armenian-Turkish intergovernmental subcommission endangers the
process of international recognition of Armenian Genocide. "This deal
is inadmissible. And the whole tragedy is that Turkey irrespective of
parliaments’ ratification has already received what it wanted. While
it continues conditioning Armenia’s wish, opening of the borders by
the Nagorno Karabakh problem," L. Zurabian said.

ANC considers that the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols is
the consequence of the policy carried on by Robert Kocharian and Serzh
Sargsyan in the past years, which resulted in placing the issue of
Armenian Genocide on foreign policy agenda and its becoming a subject
of bargaining. L.

Zurabian said that according to ANC, the only way to prevent this
process is S. Sargsyan’s resignation.

In L. Zurabian’s opinion, the U.S. exerts much pressure in the
process of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. Meanwhile he
mentioned that the possibilities of the U.S. to exert pressure upon
such a mighty country as Turkey are limited. In L. Zurabian’s words,
thanks to Turkey’s diplomacy the issue of recognition of Armenian
Genocide that poisoned the relations of U.S. and Turkey is left out
of U.S. Congress agenda.

Touching upon RA President’s visit to Turkey L. Zurabian said that he
is sure that S. Sargsyan will be met there with "greatest honors as no
Armenian leader had made such a great present to the Turkish nation."

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
