/PanARMENIAN.Net/ "Armenia is suffering demographic crisis. Compared
with 2002 results, Armenia has registered a birth-rate growth. But
2002 was a crisis year, so actually the growth is not significant.
According to 1986 results, 81 200 babies were born in Armenia, in 2002
their number fell to 32 000. Decreased marriage rate also brought to
a slump in natality," demographer Ruben Yesayan said at October 23
news conference. According to him, population size reduction will be
obvious in about 30 years, with mortality rate increasing.
Expressing his agreement with Ruben Yesayan, Demography Department
Head at RA Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Vanik Babajanyan
character the situation as a "demographic pit".
According to him, demographic issues in Armenia are on RA government’s
priority agenda.
Under existing RA laws, the state provides one-time childbirth
allowances in the amount of AMD 50 thousand, in addition to monthly
payments in the amount of AMD 12 thousand, issued till the child
reaches the age of 2. The third child is granted one-time allowance
of AMD 430 thousand.
