ArmInfo. On October 28 the National Assembly of Armenia adopted a bill
on introduction of amendments and alterations to the law "On military
service" in the first reading. Deputy Defense Minister of Armenia Ara
Nazaryan told the parliamentarians that the submitted bill aims to
bring the specified law in compliance with the Armenian Constitution
requirements, liquidation of discrepancies between a number of laws,
regulation of issues related to military service. In particular,
the bill stipulates that the servicemen leaving the military service
receive compensation for education at higher education establishments.
On the basis of the Armenian Basic Law, this provision may be applied
in accordance with a separately adopted law, which has been reflected
in the submitted bill. The contradiction, according to which the
service term may be prolonged for 5 more years for the persons having
already served the term established by the law, is also excluded.
Meanwhile, on the basis of a presidential decree, a three-year term
is established. The bill admits possible filling of the remaining
vacancies of certain types of garrisons of borderline regions
with the local residents with due regard for their experience. It
is envisaged that on the basis of the defense minister’s order,
in certain cases persons over 45 years of age may join the given
garrisons on a contractual basis. The age stipulated in the acting
law ranges from 20 to 40 years.
