Turkish filmmaker Atalay Tasdiken’s 2009 drama "Mommo: Kizkardesim"
(Mommo the Bogeyman) won the top prize at this month’s Fifth
International Children’s and Youth Film Festival in Armenia, the
film’s publicist announced on Monday.

"Mommo," which opened in theaters around Turkey in April, was inspired
by a true story. It tells the heartbreaking tale of two siblings who
live in a village near the central Anatolian city of Konya and whose
father remarried after their mother died.

"Mommo" was among the 65 films from 27 countries shown at the Fifth
International Children’s and Youth Film Festival, which ran from
Oct. 15 to 19 in Yerevan.

The film is also among the 10 films from around the world in the
running for a prize at the Mumbai International Children’s Film
Festival 2009, slated for Nov. 6-12 in Mumbai. "Mommo’s" international
awards quest will continue later next month at the Asia Pacific
Screen Awards, where it will be the only Turkish title among the 37
nominees from 16 countries vying for awards in various categories at
the awards ceremony to be held on Nov. 26. The film is being released
on DVD today.
