/PanARMENIAN.Net/ According to estimates, there are over 3,000 people
living with HIV in Armenia today. The necessity to respond to the
situation and to take preventative measures is imperative.
The Armenian Red Cross Society (ARCS) and VivaCell-MTS, with the
assistance of Yerevan Municipality, are organizing a number of events
to increase HIV/AIDS awareness.
"Thousands of people around the world become victims of this evil of
the 20th century, because of ignorance. The situation will improve if
the society starts to realize the essence of the problem and strives
to be informed. Raising public awareness is very important in fighting
it efficiently. Our cooperation with the Armenian Red Cross Society
stems from this understanding," VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph
Yirikian stated.
Today, ARCS volunteers conducted Open Lessons, highlighting the role
of young people in the fight against AIDS, in some of Yerevan schools.
Representatives of governmental, cultural and social spheres
participated.
On ARCS initiative, short videos about HIV/AIDS related discrimination
were broadcast on national TV channels.
Young ARCS volunteers distributed HIV/AIDS related information
leaflets, fliers, posters, condoms, and the symbol of the day –
the red ribbon in Yerevan’s central streets, VivaCell-MTS press
service reported.
