The Yerkir Union NGO addressed an open letter to EU Special
Representative in the South Caucasus Peter Semneby. In the letter
the organization lists numerous facts of violations of Armenians’
political, economic, social and religious rights in Georgia. In
conclusion the letter reads:
"Dear Mr. Semneby,
Considering the above, we are urging you to assume a more resolute
and efficient position on the matter and try to "explain" to the
Georgian authorities that pursuing a strong-arm policy, organizing
punitive police actions and violating human rights in dealing with
the Georgian citizens of Armenian origin means a stalemate. It is
only recognizing, protecting and exercising the fundamental rights
and freedoms of national minorities, as well as applying democratic
procedures in practice that can guarantee the country’s development.
"It is only by showing a principle-based attitude to the problems
that you can help the Georgian authorities in creating a democratic
system, which will guarantee stability in both Georgia and the entire
South Caucasus."
