46% OF FRENCH OPPOSED TO CONSTRUCTION OF MINARETS
According to a poll conducted by the French Institute of Public
Opinion for right-leaning paper Le Figaro, more and more French people
are against the construction of mosques in France.
Le Figaro reveals shocking statistics this morning regarding the
opinion of French people on the building of mosques. 46% of French
people asked by the French Institute of Public Opinion (Ifop) on
behalf said they were in favour of banning the construction of
minarets. Would the French even be thinking about this issue if
Switzerland hadn’t banned the building of minarets in a referendum
this past weekend? Perhaps not, the paper notes, but nonetheless the
question has now been asked and the results show rising concern in
France on this issue.
Furthermore, 41% of French people were opposed to the building of
mosques altogether. This is up from 22% in 2001 after the 9/11
attacks.
It should be noted that there are only 7 minarets in France – there
are probably more church spires in a single Paris arrondissement than
there are minarets in the whole country. Has this issue been blown out
of all proportion?
