UK Ambassador incites Armenia to defeat Yerevan-Ankara dialogue?
14:42 / 12/19/2009Historically UK played an intrinsic game in the
Caucasus. London had always maintained harmonious relations with
Turkey depending on advisability and as it may deem advisable;
entering into alliances and plots with regional states. Being a
typical empire, but constantly accusing say Russia of imperial
ambitions, UK carries out utterly cynical and pragmatic policy in the
region based on Caspian oil and Iranian gas priorities. Mouthpieces of
this policy are naturally ambassadors ` both former and incumbent.
For instance, former UK Ambassador Thorda Abbott-Watt was calling on
Armenians to forget about the past and look to the future. Certainly,
Mrs. Abbott-Watt was protective not of Turkey’s interests, while
voicing these ideas, but primarily tranquility and future of
Armenians. But she was got wrong. Both in terms of grounds the foreign
ambassador reckons that someone needs her advice on such a sensitive
issue and why she decided that can heal historical scars and teach a
whole nation what to think over ` bloody past or bright future. After
the scandal Abbott-Watt was recalled from Armenia and presently a new
ambassador resides on Baghramyan avenue premises ` Charles Lonsdale.
As is known, the reshuffle of ambassadors does not result in country’s
policy change. Asked by Zhamanak daily of Britain’s stance on Turkey
putting forward as precondition in Armenia-Turkey Protocols’
ratification Karabakh conflict settlement, Charles Lonsdale replied:
`We encourage parties to go ahead and ratify the Protocols, but as an
independent state Turkey is at liberty to do as it wishes and lay down
preconditions.’
Charles Lonsdale is undoubtedly right, that Turkey can lay down
preconditions, however he had to go to greater extremes and carry on
that in this case Armenia is at liberty to walk out of the talks.
Maybe this is what London seeks? Maybe the Ambassador incites, hoping
for defeating Armenia-Turkey negotiations? It could not have been
otherwise. After all, Armenian authorities clearly stated that in case
of preconditions’ put forward the Protocols’ will be cancelled.
