ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION IN ARMENIA DEDICATED TO THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF BAKU POGROMS

A roundtable discussion dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Baku
massacres was held in Yerevan at the initiative of the Ombudsman’s
Office of Armenia.

A most real genocide was perpetrated against the Armenian population of
the Azerbaijani capital in 1990. Tens of Armenians were killed between
January 13 and 20. Thousands were beaten, many became handicapped.

Armenians were exiled from the country, their property was robbed.

"Twenty years after these events the issue of rights of the people
that passed through all the horrors remains unsolved," Human Rights
Defender Armen Harutyunyan said.

"Our approach is as follows: it’s necessary to draw lessons and think
how it is possible to avoid reoccurrence of such events in the future,"
he said.
