As of December 2009, the unemployment rate in Armenia reached 7.1%,
while it was estimated 6.3% at the beginning of the year, Head of
the State Employment Agency Sona Harutyunyan told a press conference
today. However, according to her, the numbers do not reflect the real
picture of unemployment rate in the country.

"We have conducted a research to calculate the real number of the
unemployed in Armenia, according to which the unemployment rate
was estimated 27.5%, while the official figure is 7.1%. As it is
officially said, it’s the ratio of the number of the unemployed to
the number of the employed," Sona Harutyunyan said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
