The Armenian Constitutional Court’s decision on the Armenian-Turkish
Protocols was on the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Committee of
Turkey’s Grand National Assembly’s January 21 meeting.
Opposition party members from the Republican People’s Party (RPP)
and Nationalist Movement Party (NMP), reacting to the Armenian court’s
ruling, have demanded that the Turkish government immediately withdraw
the Protocols from parliament.
However, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and senior member
of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, Murat Mercan,
according to Today’s Zaman, said that parliament was in no rush to
hold a debate on these protocols.
"The decision by Armenia’s Constitutional Court contradicts the letter
and spirit of the signed Protocols. The process has been harmed.
However, we must arm ourselves with patience. Hasty steps might
place Turkey in a difficult situation," said Mercan, according to
Gazete Vatan.
