As of data collected up to December 31, 2009, unemployment in Armenia,
as compared to 2008, has risen by 0.8%, and is currently at 7.1%,
said Sona Harutyunyan, head of the State Employment Service Agency.

According to her, a number of issues and challenges in the area of
unemployment in 2009 were due to the global economic crisis.

During the press conference today, Harutyunyan presented some facts
from the preceding year: the agency was able to secure employment
for 9,400 individuals who were previously unemployed. Out of those,
37% had been enrolled in the state agency’s programs.

"Our issues are to support both those who are unemployed to find
work in their field and employers to find staff – and with that,
supporting economic development," she said.

The state agency director said that in 2009, 4,960 individuals found
temporary employment, while 33,300 individuals have received support
through the agency’s programs (for which the Armenian government had
allocated 1 billion 400 million AMD). A number of programs have also
been implemented thanks to the support of international agencies.
