HUNGARIAN SUPREME COURT RULES NATO RADAR CONSTRUCTION SUSPENSION

Hungary’s Supreme Court has ruled to suspend building permission for
the NATO radar on a hill overlooking the south-eastern city of Pecs,
the city mayor’s office told MTI on Monday.

The Supreme Court ruling on January 20 came as the result of a
re-examination of the case filed by civil organisations of a November
27 ruling which had given the green light to the project.

In December last year, the Defence Ministry said the construction of
the NATO radar on Tubes hill would continue, weather permitting.

The Tubes hill is the second site chosen for the radar, after nearby
Zengo peak was abandoned due to strong protest on environmental grounds
by President Laszlo Solyom and several civil groups, MTI reports.
