In reply to the question Can the United States give up the South
corridor for normalization of the Turkey-Armenia relations, the U.S.
Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy Richard Morningstar said: We are not
naive, and understand that today the processes related to Armenia and
Nagorno Karabakh is a part of the Turkey-Azerbaijan relations. The US
government cannot give up the energy corridor for normalization of the
relations between Ankara and Yerevan. According to Richard Morningstar,
Washington supports opening of a new corridor to transport Caspian
natural gas resources to Europe. This corridor will include Nabucco
and the Turkey-Greece-Italy pipelines.
At his words, both projects will bring huge finance and close
partnership to the South Caucasian and Central Asian countries, and
the key goal is to reach agreement between Azerbaijan and Turkey on
transit prices.
In failure of these goals, the companies will eliminate their contract
and the South Corridor will not be realized.
Richard Morningstar said they would not be happy if Iran will joint
the project. And the United States will not change its policy to this
end, Morningstar added.
